Career History
Roy Carroll was Wigan Athletic's record signing in April 1997, when they paid Hull City £350,000 for his services. The Fermanagh-born goalkeeper soon established himself as first choice at Wigan, where he made 170 appearances (136 in the league).

Roy had previously played 50 games for Hull City, whom he joined as a trainee in September 1995.

He earned the first of his nine senior caps for Northern Ireland on 21 May 1997, against Thailand. His main rival for the international position is now Fulham's Maik Taylor.

Recent History
With Raimond Van der Gouw moving more into coaching Alex Ferguson signed Carroll in July 2001 as an understudy to Fabien Barthez. Last season Fergie had to sign Andy Goram on loan at short notice when both Barthez and Van der Gouw were injured at a vital part of the season.

Roy Carroll should feature in at least a few games this season and will provide an excellent alternative should the brilliant French stopper become injured,
